Questions to Ask Before Spine Surgery

Walking into a surgical consultation with written questions changes the conversation from being informed to making a decision.

Questions to Ask Before Spine Surgery

Start with the problem itself. Which part of my spine is causing these symptoms, and how do you know the imaging finding matches what I feel? A finding on a scan only matters when it explains the symptoms in front of it.

Then ask about the goal. Is this operation meant to relieve leg pain, arm pain, back pain, weakness, or instability? Operations are very good at some of those and far less reliable for others, and knowing the target sets realistic expectations.

Ask what happens without surgery, and what non-surgical steps have not yet been tried. Ask how long recovery takes in weeks, what you will be able to do at each stage, and what support you will need at home during the first two weeks.

Finally, ask about the specifics: how many levels are involved, whether anything is being fused, what the risks are for your particular health history, and who to call when something does not feel right after discharge.

Bring a second pair of ears and write the answers down. A decision made with clear answers holds up far better than one made under pressure.
